Herning

Once the historic heart of the region's textile industry, this quiet city remains an artistic and cultural hub.

About

Founded in the 1790’s, Herning was built to service the surrounding farms reclaimed from the heathlands. Later, the establishment of many cottage textile industries led to the town’s rapid growth, and despite modern diversification it is still important today. Herning has a wealth of attractions to enjoy amongst its tidy streets. The history of the textile industry can be discovered at the comprehensive Tekstilmuseet, where youngsters can experience working at the children’s factory. The striking redbrick Herning Church nearby, with it’s impressive church organ, is worth a look too. The Frilandsmuseet, an open-air museum, offers an authentic village atmosphere from 200 years ago, where you can move from old farm buildings to iron forges to beehives. There is also a portrayal of an apartment during the Nazi occupation, and especially for the children the Jens Nielsen Farm show the daily life around an early 1900’s farm.
